I recently received a call from a friend who was terribly upset about a conversation she had with an esteemed and long time mentor. During the conversation with her mentor, she revealed one of her deep aspirations, to which her mentor responded, “You can’t do that!”
After listening to my friend vent her frustrations I calmly replied, “Never let anyone tell to you what you cannot do.”
In my experience most people don’t tell a client, friend, mentee, or child they can’t do something to be malicious. Typically, it’s because the topic or goal being discussed is outside of their comfort zone, realm of desire, understanding and/or experience. Sometimes it’s simply something the mentor has not been successful at attaining.
So again, don’t let anyone convince YOU of what YOU CANNOT do!
But, do listen!
Listening will help you understand why they think you can’t.
This knowledge can be extremely helpful in creating and executing your plan, and then successfully navigating around the potential mistakes and pitfalls your doubters have pointed out.
One of my favorite quotes related to this principle is by Richard Bach.
“An idea is never given to you without you being given the power to make it reality….”
So, yes you can!
Now for those of you who need just a tad bit more encouragement, if you don’t trust Bach and I, that’s fine…
How about this?
You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
Any direction you choose
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy (or gal) who’ll decide where to go.
After all, it’s hard to refute the late great Dr. Seuss!
Stay inspired,it’s a lifestyle choice!
